Thread: Best Albums of 2010

  1. The new albums from Electric Wizard and The Sword were both killer. I don't think I listened to anything else that came out in 2010 besides the Quarantines which is also killer, but not album I guess.

And to follow up on a question that icarusfall asked in another thread, NO Black Masses is not like Dopethrone in any way, shape or form. New Electric Wizard is not like old Electric Wizard. Different band, different sound If you heard that Witchcult one it's like that but a tad better.

The best album I heard for the first time in 2010 is definitely Witchcraft's debut from I think 2006. It's super duper retro classico and actually totally chock full of stuff that I would normally call 'gay'. Motherfucker even plays a FLUTE on one song. But somehow the whole thing, every bit of it, really strikes a chord with me so there's no way I'll deny it. Here, get a taste:

I forgot to mention that The Sword gets a buttload of extra points this year for putting out this:

Ok, listening to Jeph of QC's top ten albums list and I've added Menomena's "Mines" to my list.

  7. top five i'd have to say

    1. Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time (quite simply the best Blind Guardian album start to finish, as a collective album that is, it was totally unexpected and thrilling, gets better with each listen and is a great look backwards and forwards. Amazing!)

    2. Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony/Angel of Babylon (i think that many who follow metal will scoff at this, being it is pop based epic power metal but I dont care, great songwriting with the trademark epicness and catchiness of Tobias Sammet at his best, along with a great cinematic production. I listened to these all year and I'm still not tired of them.)

    3. Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini (by far the best Enslaved album since Isa, just killer from start to finish. They toned down the progressiveness of their last few records and turned up the aggression and it makes for a beautiful album.

    Honorable mentions:

    4. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier (great record, from start to finish, despite getting a little too long towards the end, the best Maiden album since Brave New World)
    5. Burzum - Belus (an unexpected snappy, fierce black metal masterpiece from someone who quite honestly I doubt anyone ever expected anything good from again)
