Thread: Ask The Experts!

  1. Ask The Experts!

Got a dumb question that you think one of the many knowledgeable game nerds enthusiasts here might know the answer too? Ask it here!

I'm bored so I'm playing Phantasy Star IV. As I was walking past a mirror, it struck me how cool it was the first time a mirror in a game showed my characters reflection in it. PS4 doesn't do this, but the first time I noticed it was in some RPG.
What's the earliest game that had something like that going on?

That's actually an interesting good question though. Use of mirrors is interesting in entertainment media; I remember flipping a shit in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust when the main character who is half vampire and half human was transparent in a mirror. It was a really smart touch and quick enough that they didn't shove it down your throat. Still, it showed a lot of care and detail to think of something like that.

Wasn't something like that featured in that one Capcom Disney NES game, the Adventures in Magic Kingdom or whatever? I think it was the Haunted House part that had reflective mirrors which functioned.

    Survey says yes:

    Go to 2:15.

Knowing this, there's probably some 7800 game or something which I never played that had it first.

I'm sure it isn't the first, but Prince of Persia in 1989 showed your character's reflection in a mirror. And then got really creative.

I think Ys 1 had character reflections in mirrors. There must be older examples but I can't think of any. With questions like this, I find that with nearly all of them the first is from no later than 1984.

That's because all innovations started with Nintendo and the Famicom, right NZE?

  7. Nintendo is like Nazi Germany. We can't find any info because they burned it all.

  8. Splatterhouse's (arcade JPN ver./1988) hall of mirrors scene from stage 4 is the first time I've seen something like this. If NZE is right then Ys 1 (1987) has it beat.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
