Time for the Next Generation?

I can do 3D on my new card and monitor setup, but nobody else I know IRL gives a flying rats ass about 3DTV or gaming. It's the betamax of gaming right now.

Seems like most folks in the U.S really don't care much for it yet.

North America will buy any piece of gimmicky crap that commercials tell us to so this hostility to 3DTV is quite interesting. But at the same time, Kinect.

There's an article in the new EGM about how developers won't risk high dollar new IPs on old consoles. That's why all we're getting is sequels from here on out with very few notable exceptions.

They're dumb. Look no further than God of War for a property that skyrockets on a consoles downcycle. A good game is a good game - people will spread the word (I actually thought the GOW QTE fest was retarded).

I am ready for new consoles, though. Just because I like new and better things.

My stance today, pending a massive test of my willpower, is that I am picking a horse and riding it next generation. I play 4-5 hours of console games on a really good week these days; it's ridiculous to have three of them splitting that time or two of them being ignored.

You say that every generation old man. You'll buy all of them.

It is going to take time, but eventually 3DTV will take over simply because while it is currently being used as a differentiator between regular HDTV sets and their 3D counterparts, soon enough every set being manufactured will be a 3D capable set. Sooner or later, as people replace their sets, the next one will most likely have 3D on it by default, even when they stop touting it as the next big thing.

3D TV's are garbage. Expensive to buy, expensive glasses/accessories, and the picture brightness is NOTICEABLY dimmer than your standard LCD/LED/Plasma screen. Sales for the holidays are way below projections since the introduction last March. 3D TV's are far from a sure standard moving forward.

I like new and shiny tech, but the next generation of consoles is quickly dropping on my list of things to care about. I'm pretty content with what is out and available right now, mainly NHL and Battlefield. I am more interested in faster connection and better netcode than jumps in graphics, though Battlefield on consoles would probably benefit from a bit more power.

Or... they could just "annualize" their brand and sell it to the same customers every single year. It costs less money and they don't need to sink a lot of money into "brand building."

Next generation doesn't start until Sony says it does, so bug them

also: I have a hard time pulling away from console because we all buy our games on console and not PC, even though tons of us have PCs much more capable. Console is "good enough". If I bought NFS on PC I could play with no one. Sure, it looks better, but apparently not enough for us to throw out our consoles and buy the PC version. Also: bugs

This is my entire point. Console gaming is all about what you have to give up. Is it the framerate like most games? Is it AA for a game with good frame rates? Is it resolution to get 3D? Fuck compromise.

It's not that much different with PC gaming. There's no way I'm getting 60fps out of Metro 2033, with eveything turned up to max.

I've ran plenty of PC games at 1920 x 1080, with 8 x AA on and didn't notice much of a difference to that of not having AA at all. When you're running at that high of a resolution, AA becomes less of a need.

Yeah, it has quite a bit of bang for the buck. I upgraded from a factory overclocked GTS 250.
