    #1 - Kinect Adventures (360) 1000/1000

I was a complete fucking hater until John got this for Christmas from a relative. After he emptied out his living room to make enough space (the requirement for two people are a little much) everything has worked a lot better than I expected. Instant co-op drop in/drop out of any game at any time while the Kinect recognizes your face, signs you in, and pulls up your avatar. The minigames range from boring to great, but they do show off what the technology is capable of doing. Nobody should expect a great game or anything, but as a technical demo it's totally Nick Arcade up in this bitch... basically something that you can't do with any other game/hardware combination, and it's pretty damn impressive. The only negative (repetition aside) is that I feel like I've been run over by a couple of cars, but that's more to do with me being an overweight 30-year-old than anything else.

    All of it sucks.
Go back to your garbagey cell phone games, pls.
You'll be joining me soon enough when they replace the overpriced trash from Japan that you play on your DS.

  3. Uh, PSP2 and especially 3DS are around the corner and will stick around for a good long while. The shitty $1 flash apps you worship aren't going to be stealing me away any time soon.

Ignorance is bliss. So when the same game is $30-40 on DS and PSP and $5 or less on iOS, are you paying $30 for a shitty flash app?

  5. Who does that? Were you doing that?

    1. Poker Night at the Inventory (PC)

This is an odd one to "beat," but there is a system somewhat a kin to boss battles. Each character will randomly buy in with special items. If you eliminate them from that tournament, you get their item, e.g. Max's badge and gun. So for purposes of cataloging, I'm going to say that getting all of those items is "beating" the game. It actually takes a fair amount of time for all of them to buy in with their items. The most disappointing thing about this game is that there is no multiplayer at all, which seems odd for a poker game. It's purely single player Texas Hold'em. There is a fair amount of dialog for each character, but you'll definitely hear it all multiple times prior to unlocking most of the achievements. It was a $5 game at launch though, so maybe it's a classic "you get what you pay for."

That's how I had felt about iOS apps... until lately when stuff like EspGaluda 2 and Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu started appearing. Sure these two are better on 360, but not bad for $9 portable versions. After trying DDP DFK on a friend's iPhone, I just might get a 32GB iPod Touch 4.

I'm just playing wait and see on the PSP2 & 3DS, though if I had to pick one it would likely be PSP2. Backward compatibility may not happen, since PSP2 is supposedly losing the UMD and having games distributed on memory stick. OTOH if this does away with the PSP loading times, great. Having 1GB RAM sounds good, but I don't trust the rumors of it having more CPU power than a 360.

    2010's Wii Mascot Platform Trio

Retro accomplished what I'm sure they set out to do: make a great looking and playing DKC game. I can't say much beyond that. It's very polished and fun to play but also completely safe in design. You won't really find anything that hasn't been done in many Nintendo platformers before. It doesn't innovate like Jungle Beat did.

This is the first post-DC console Sonic that actually feels like it was released in a finished state and not rushed out the door 6 months early. The "style over substance", on-rails sections still comprise a bit too much of the game but they do manage to transition very smoothly with the real platforming parts. The 2d gameplay sections are actually well designed (although the controls could use a little tightening). So, if you're like me and hate what's happened to Sonic in recent years, this might change your mind. I wouldn't rank it up there with the 16-bit classics but it's the best Sonic game in a long time and it's also not trying to be the same type of game.

I feel conflicted over this game. I do think it's good but it's also my disappointment of the generation. I was really hoping it would push choice/consequence and emergent design forward. This gen needs it. That's pretty much Spector's mission statement, and he has a couple groundbreaking games in my top 10 already. Also, I'm a fan of old-school Disney as Fantasia's my favourite animated movie.

So what went wrong? Gamasutra has an article devoted to the choice aspect that covers it well. Basically, most of the choices amount to two things: jack and shit. Solutions to puzzles and tasks are basically planted right in front of you most of the time. Difficult and creative decision making aren't required because there the challenge isn't there. There were occasional moments where I got a nice Deus Ex vibe, and I do think the choices are still more interesting here than not having them, but it could have been so much more involved in that regard. And speaking of challenge, the action itself is also way on the easy side until late in the game. The camera and aiming issues didn't bother me as much as I thought they would but they were annoying on occasion.

What went right? It does feel fresh. The paint/thinner concept is new and I liked splashing it around to explore and manipulate the environment. Also, a ton of effort was put into making the game a tribute to classic Disney and to include forgotten works. I was excited to see what stuff would be in each level. This game was a labour of love and I would recommend it to Disney fans but it also tried a bit too hard to bring "playstyle matters" to the masses and suffered as a result.

  10. Mafia 2

Not a bad GTA-thing overall, with extremely nice graphics. I've said elsewhere that it feels like a mob movie with horrible, horrible editing. "Hey Vito, let's go to that place. You drive." And do you ever. At length.

The story is alright, some of the character motivations are a little iffy at times, and your semi-silent protagonist Vito is kind of lame! I wouldn't mind so much if I felt like I had any kind of agency over the decisions in the game; unfortunately, you have to see the world through this dude's wishy-washy perspective.

Combat's good, and the weapons feel like they've actually got some punch. Sliding into cover is really well done! The graphics are REALLY nice; one particular bit where a fish tank bursts may be the prettiest thing I've ever seen in a video game. Nice blood effects too; there's a very effective bit involving cleavers that I winced at. The weather effects great, and the city looks really nice at night. The game does this odd thing where it cuts to video cinemas sometimes (it telegraphs this by sticking you in a particular outfit for a mission); the prerendered scenes look waaaay worse than the gameplay! Grainy, bad close ups on the character models, washed-out --looks like they made the videos with the graphics set to "low". I can see why they did this (explosions and montage sequences that would be hard to load in-game, mostly), but I wish they didn't. The mood of the game is fantastic, the 40s/50s atmosphere is great, and most of the key "setpiece" sequences are really well done. The 'vintage porn collectothon' is a bit better than the standard b.s. item collecting devices in these games, just as far as "hey, titties! in a game! neat!" goes.

The very worst thing in the game is the driving; it's terrible, it's bullshit, it takes a million years to get anywhere, the controls are bad, the cars are slow unless you buy upgrades, and it's only there to make the game time longer. Some of the passenger dialog is good and it moves the story forward, but holy shit let the computer drive once in a while. There's a couple chase scenes where your buddy is hanging out the window and shooting, and you really wish you were doing that instead of driving the stupid boat of a car around. Poor form.

    pickin' nits:
-Would have liked the "stickup" mechanic to be a bit more developed, robbing a store is a very awkward activity in the game. (simulacrum at work?)
-Fistfighting is weird and clunky, but there's not a lot of it at least.
-It is not possible for a car to go undamaged for longer than 30 seconds in this game, even parked.
-The cops are more annoying an actual problem; most car chases are because you dinged some car driving around and you have to shake them before you can get to a story location. Lame.
-Game is way easy on Hard. Modern nintendo tapes are like that a lot.
-Needed more variety; more radio stations, more locations, more things to do on foot.

Got the DLC on sale dirt-cheap, Joe's Adventure looks like it'll be ok, but Jimmy's Vendetta seems crappy right off the bat. I'll play 'em some other time, back to drawing pictures and Super Meat Boy (the better game by far!)
