Thread: Dark Souls - Spiritual Sequel to Demon's Souls

  1. For Lautrec, why don't you guys wait to kill him when he returns to Firelink Shrine, right after you rescue him? It's much easier to kill him there -- just push him off the cliff.

The last time I fought him was near his prison and it was fun!

He chased me through the chapel and the surrounding area and since I didn't kill any of the Baldur Knights and other Hollows they chased after the both of us. Lautrec eventually died when one of them backstabbed him.

That's what I should have done, but I didn't realize how little damage I'd do against him when I attacked in his cell. Thought I may be able to surprise him in there, but it was I who was surprised!

Interesting blog post offering some possibilities as to why the PC port is the way it is, ultimately to encourage people to purchase it despite the lack of PC video options it has.

  5. I had no trouble beating Lautrec in Anor Londo, I just kited him up the stairs while lobbing fireballs.

Yeah, to be honest I haven't really given this a proper go - I had my 4 year old running around begging to play Minecraft the whole time, which tends to throw you off. I've got maxed pyro and a few hours to myself today, so hopefully I get through, though I wish I had a fire weapon.

Question to both SL1 players and regular pyros - what's your go-to pyromancy? Up until yesterday I was rocking dual Fireballs, but then I found out how effective Combustion was when you incorporate it into your melee game. Being able to carry 32 casts is pretty great too.

Those all seem like legitimate arguments, but damn are there a lot of them. I'm still in wait for the 50% off sale mode on it. I won't boycott it completely, because it is something new and unique to the platform. The guy who wrote the article must not realize that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls aren't the only games From has made though.
Countdown to the de facto end of the console generation: 5 exclusives
Most recent: Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut (4/30)
Next up: The Last of Us (6/11)
Later: Puppeteer (9/10), Beyond: Two Souls (10/18), Rain (TBA), Until Dawn (TBA)

  7. Yea, exactly. There are a lot of them. It's a complicated problem.

The game was never meant to show up on the PC. Namco offered it up based on community requests - this is what we get. They're not going to devote months of expensive programmer time (not to mention possible artist time) to rewrite the engine for PC.

Combustion is very very useful, I always liked keeping that around because of how many casts it has and the decent damage it deals. Great chaos fireball and the larger fireball were always my backups, the chaos fireball's AOE damage on top of the initial hit is massive, awesome for most bosses, and will catch a lot of large enemies off guard. 4 casts is the only downside, and that it takes 2 slots. Not sure what kind of loadout I'll go with since slots are limited this time, but most likely just Combustion and Fireball.

And that article was a great read, and a good look at plausible reasons for why the PC version is handled the way it is.

Combustion is definitely a must, especially with the upgraded pyro glove. It's a great help on bosses. I'd like to keep a second, un-upgraded pyro hand around to experiment with Power Within. Other than that I just keep regular Fireballs in slot 2.
