Thread: Official Wii U Thread

  1. #1561
The power isn't even my big issue with it. It's the region lock and the lack of achievements. There are VC games in Japan I would buy right now if the Wii had the same online set up as the PS3. If the Wii U would have fixed this, I would have transferred my US Wii content over and then bought the Japanese content. A Wii U is way cheaper than Twinklestar Sprites or Pulstar, even on MVS, and there are several non-Neo games I'd like too. But no, Nintendo has to fuck it up for absolutely no good reason.

  2. I don't care that much about achievements really. I just bought a PC after amassing 70K GS. I know that I can't have a one platform future. But I'm playing Mario and I realize it doesn't hold a candle to SMW. Super Meat Boy, OTOH, is a FANTASTIC game. I'm playing ZombiU yesterday. The controls are messed up and the whole time you're fighting your intution to keep looking at the main screen. There are buttons on the touchscreen (which aren't real buttons, so they suck) and so far I'm not even using most of the regular buttons on the controller. Again, maybe this gets better. But the sticks are bad, the clicking sucks on them, the BACK button is in a weird spot, the face buttons are eh, the triggers are not analog and don't have any good feel to them. You don't want to try any OS stuff out because it takes an hour and a half to back out of the thing so that's out.

I went overboard on the Wii, but it was truly shit. This is less shit but I'm level headed about this.

Achievements aren't about the aggregate for me, in part because I do split play time across platforms. Steam doesn't total your achievements in any way, but they are still there and easily accessible from the hub. With how many die hard Nintendo fans and achievement fans there are, combining the two just seems like an insane oversight. How many Nintendo fans would buy a multiplatform game on the Wii U to boost their total? It has to be a lot. Granted, that hurts third parties more than Nintendo, and Nintendo still doesn't seem to have figured out how to handle them.

  4. $100 please. That's my goal for the system, although Platinum might make me crack at $150.

  5. Nintendo is banking on the following groups:

    A. Us. People that buy everything anyway even if we complain about it
    B. Nintendo fans. They buy anything Nintendo anyway

and the rest? Well, I am sure the logic is that the 360 is good enough and this is more of a Netflix box than the other systems (never mind that it's not as good at multimedia functions, but they won't know). The graphics will be good enough and no one will care if the controller sucks.

The people that bought it solely for the Wiimote might not convert, but if they can be hoodwinked into believing it's the multimedia box of all time then I can see them getting it because it is small.

You think there are really people left that want a set top box, don't have one, and won't go for the cheapest one?

  7. I think it's a tipping point for people that don't know if they should get a WiiU for the kids since it's 300 dollars.

I have no idea, maybe the Wii is enough for even that group. But kids like new things so...

  8. Pardon my ignorance, but what's the 3DS debacle that was alluded to earlier?

I think he meant the huge and quick price drop.

  10. Price drop in the same year.
