And that is a complete lack of principles. It's not too dissimilar to pirating because you want to play the game but don't want to pay for it.
Non-upgradable internal storage, proprietary accessories, region locking, etc.
1. You can hook up any external drive and use it the same as internal storage - unquestionably an improvement over 360 and, IMO, an improvement over PS3, especially if it "just works" without formatting (MS has technology that does this in Windows so I expect it).
2. A problem for me! But not a problem for someone who doesn't have 360 accessories they want to use on the One.
3. Don't care. I don't know why the fact that I can't play a game I don't care about should stop me from playing a game I do care about.
External storage is better than standard internal storage? So when you want to upgrade your PC's storage, you'll go buy an external drive? Give me a fucking break.
This is the gun control argument in gaming form. If you don't care about it, it must not be a right or a choice anyone would want or need.
See, now we are just getting into nitpicky details. That's not principles, just preferences. It is a simple fact that you are not stuck with the One's built-in storage. It's also a fact that you do not need to buy propietary drives as you did on 360.
None of this bothers me because PC's are around for this more open type of thing, you more than anyone should know this.
I don't really have anything against "closed" hardware unless it becomes a persistent problem and none of the above have been issues for me with the 360 and PS3 but then again I don't import the way I used to and I can manage system memory pretty well.
Facts are now "nitpicky details." Being unable to upgrade internal storage is absolutely limiting consumer choice. So were the proprietary 360 drives. Neither has anything to do with preference.
Yea, it actually is a nitpicky detail. You want to upgrade storage, you can upgrade storage. You want to use off-the-shelf parts, you can use off-the-shelf parts. Just because it is not exactly how you want it doesn't mean it is some principled stand, and it definitely doesn't mean that everybody should agree. Only one system ever let you upgrade storage the way you describe.
