Thread: Official Xbox One Thread

  1. I don't care about any of this. Thinking about it, I don't see why companies leveraging their work to make a profit is a bad thing. The fact is the business model we all grew up with is basically dead and companies need to figure out a way forward. Signing over their life to Valve and Microsoft and Sony probably isn't a good idea for the medium to long term.

Valve is one thing, but what value do Sony and Microsoft bring if they can't/won't control the content on their closed platform? What's next? A dedicated store front for each publisher, even on consoles? It's like the PC is regressing in terms of unification, and the consoles are following. We're headed for Android-style nonsense if this continues.

A console that hosts these services basically becomes like a Roku with independent content providers but common services. That's not that interesting to me actually, but it may be where the market is headed. I don't think console companies can exert strict control over their platforms the way MS did on 360. Even to implement stuff like Minecraft updating requires giving devs/pubs more control.

Yeah, I guess everyone would draw the line differently, but my ideal would be that publishers, including indies, can self-update and obvious consumer-friendly things like that, but they should be stopped short of running their own meta services on consoles or splintering things like demos, store fronts, etc. Isn't the entire point of consoles and even Steam to unify everything? I find nothing attractive about moving away from that, and there is no way anything championed by EA or Ubisoft is in the name of open competition and consumer value.

  5. The problem for the publishers comes when they feel they can do things cheaper than the 30% vig each of the platform holders take. Speaking of which shouldn't that have gone down by now just because of competition? It's weird that every platform holder had the same rate (Google and Apple too, although Windows Phone is lower) and it is basically non-negotiable.

I agree that is odd, especially for digital. It used to be that Sega and Nintendo had to manufacture expensive cartridges, but that time is obviously well passed.
