Thread: Rayman Origins

Why didn't anyone tell me this game was so good? I guess aside from this entire thread.

Ubi really did just release this at the shittiest time possible to die. Fuck them, this game is amazing.

I don't think I could resist getting this again when a Steam sale hits.

  3. Since I just put together an i5 build, I could not resist downloading the demo right away when it hit Steam.

I'm pretty sure I didn't even finish the demo before I purchased it. $30, come on - that's suuuuch a steal!

I read (wikipedia maybe?) that Ubisoft designed an artwork engine for this game so that they could focus on making lots of awesome graphics and the artists didn't need a lot of programming know-how. I think they may have even got a grant from France. Could explain how they've managed to recoup their investment, perhaps.

Although I'm absolutely a sucker for pixelated 2D spritey goodness, in a case like this, I really think they hit the nail on the head. This is a gorgeous game. The animation is so fluid - especially the character movements. I've never seen a 2D character move so fluidly. Each level seems to add assets that weren't apparent in the last. And the music is terrific - that was clear from the second world with the didgeridoo level, and the amazingly epic Mosquito music.

Most importantly, of course, the game is fun as balls! It's addictive in that simplistic way that only 2D sidescrollers have ever been for me... I can't wait to trade controllers with a friend, or maybe even try the co-op. Because it's good and challenging... while the levels aren't so hard to finish, I can tell I'll be gnawing at 100% completion like I haven't done since something like Yoshi's Island. (Or maybe VVVVVV.)

What a fucking sweet game. I'm savoring it. Here's hoping BG&E2 is in the works... I'd be totally fine with them exploiting this art engine for a new take on that world!

Oh, hai, btw. It's been awhile!

I'm almost done making my way through the launch Vita games but I do plan on going back to Rayman for 100%.

  5. So this game is really good? I played the demo but I played in co-op. If I were to play the real game, I'd play it by myself and take my time. Anyone have that experience with this? I'd like to like it, and it's half price now.

  6. If you like the controls, the single-player game is pretty great. The on-foot level in the demo is a good example of the full game. The gimmicky demo levels (shooter and boss fight) are also in there but they're not all that common.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing, and it's friggin' great.
