Thread: Rayman Origins

  1. Within the space of a few posts you manage to spend as much effort in voicing dislike for AC, some FPS shit, and Madden
No - I said I really enjoy AC2 and when trying to talk about it with other gamers, it's dismissed since it's no longer the current version of that series.

Same with MW - I like the series but last time I played MW2 (the last one I've owned so far) it was a very, very empty experience now that MW3 is out.

This isn't to voice dislike for those games, franchises, or genres. It's not even a dig at Madden in itself - just the Madden-like effect that a lot of games (especially high profile ones) are experiencing.

It's that sensibility I don't like, and I like that Rayman Origins is still fun and still feels fresh. Whether that's because the playing field for 2D platformers is so empty that anything can stay relevant at a stretch, or because it's just a really good game in itself can be debated. But that's the feeling I get - Rayman Origins is still relevant in that scope. I don't know of another holiday released title outside Skyrim or MW3 that can say the same. People aren't talking about Arkham City or Gears 3 like they used to.

You said this has always been the state of the industry, but if that were the case no one would still be playing game like Pac Man or Super Mario Bros. 3, or at least being iconic topics of discussion to this day. When was the last time Halo 1 was looked on with the same nostalgia/reverence?

(I'm not saying it can't or couldn't be, but that you say it's always been this way when it hasn't as far as I can tell)

And yeah, I could say I like the game and leave it at that. I have before. I was just surprised/impressed that its still being talked about, and couldn't come up with a big-name game that was still generating that kind of continued interest (well, outside Skyrim and MW3). That doesn't mean I don't like those game either, or are shitting all over them.

The thread is about Rayman Origins. This statement is irrelevant. Shut the fuck up.

Pac Man was deprecated by Ms Pac Man decades ago, and more recently by the Champion Edition games. Shut the fuck up.

When the HD revision of it came out. Shut the fuck up.

Street Fighter 2 says hi and says to shut the fuck up.

Then you should continue to do so for the remainder of your life.

Who fucking cares about other games when talking about Rayman Origins.

    Shut the fuck up.

  4. Keep the discussion civil.

  5. No, I don't think he should shut the fuck up. This is an interesting question: how do you make a franchise installment that doesn't dismiss former entries completely? Whether you agree with his examples or not (I honestly haven't played any edition of Assassin's Creed), the MW1,2,3 and Madden analogies make sense to me. It's almost this sequel mentality of "This one is going to be so good that you'll completely forget about the last one."

However, I don't consider my actual critique of a game to have much connection to its "relevance" in society. It's interesting to consider, but I don't think the two are mutually-exclusive. Relevance =/= Quality. Not necessarily. [I do think there are some exceptions to this rule, like how if Mega Man 9 were released back on the NES, it wouldn't have been as noteworthy as it was after a 15 year hiatus of that style. It would have been a good game in 1994, but in 2009, it was an awesome game.] Maybe it's because I don't have a smartphone, but I don't really consider Angry Birds to be a hugely inspiring game. It's okay. It's no Mario Brothers.

The problem isn't whether or not the sequels invalidate the previous games it's he's pretending this is some issue which only happens these days and only to huge franchise entries. That kind of sequel mentality has existed in most videogame series which have ever existed, be they huge money sinks with crazy hype or casual indie releases. Most of the time the differences are only apparent to people who are fans of a series and really get into it anyway.

Super Mario Bros. was made irrelevant by The Lost Levels.

I guess that's why nobody's talking about it anymore!!!

  8. Unless they're talking about the history of platformers, of course.

Gotta say, I know many a person whose intro to videogamedom was the X-Box killer app and yet Halo Anniversary is just nothing. You hear nothing about it.

Ummm on track, Rayman Origins seems fun???
