An anecdote: I worked at EB during the Dreamcast launch. If you remember, the system had a lot of pre-launch buzz but Sega also made sure they had ample supply for everyone. And guess what, we had a ton of people who walked in on 9/10 and 9/11 to buy systems. Why? Because their friends were raving about it, the games looked great, etc. Hell I didn't pre-order one but bought one on 9/10.

As opposed to the PS2, which launch was popular but then you had a month of people frantically searching and getting pissed off because they couldn't find one. It's crappy.

That's the anecdote you want to use? That Sega marketed the DC better than Sony did the PS2?

I get what he's saying though. Korly had a Dreamcast on day one, I went out and bought one as soon as I saw his.

Also marketing doesn't equal creating supply, although it should increase demand.

Have any of you ever went to sign into PSN and, for no reason, your password didn't work? I was able to make a one via e-mail reset and everything, but I found it strange since I never changed it.

It's not about marketing, it's about getting units to people who want them. For all that Sega screwed up, that launch was perfect. What's the point of great marketing if I can't buy what they are selling?

It's not just about launch. The whole point is to keep the buzz going through at least the launch window, and no time value of money discount is going to materially change over three to six months, especially at interest rates of basically zero. What it boils down to is that you are essentially claiming that you, with no data, and Sega know more about selling consoles than Sony and Microsoft do with all the data in the world.

edit: What would have made this a more interesting debate is if Sony and MSFT took opposite approaches. Would the lack of availability of a PS4 lead to the sale of an X1 for example?

edit2: Sony hasn't even launched anywhere but North America yet either, so their million units in 24 hours was in two countries. They want to make sure they can fill preorders everywhere else I am sure.

best way to avoid headaches in the future is to disassociate your credit card with psn if it's tied in and use strictly GC/paypal funding for a while
