Thread: Official PlayStation 4 Thread

For anyone interested in system architecture, I found this writeup on how The Crew was ported from PC to PS4 fascinating.

I had never heard the two PS4 memory buses called "Onion and Garlic" before. That's certainly more flavorful than the Jaguar's "Tom and Jerry" processors.

  2. The Jaguar controller should be codenamed Mammy Two Shoes.

  3. Amazon's getting silly. Received my prepping for shipment email. (yes I know it's not shipping)

  4. But maybe Sony wants to beat MS to the punch this time! Then you will not mind your launch system dying on you cause you went through it with the 360 like 3 times and it came out way earlier!

    Surprise early launch, Saturn style!
Korly-"Everyone here is an asshole, SURPRISE!"

  6. So rumor has it that the OS uses up to 3.5GB of the system's memory. Ouch.

  7. oh, hopefully people find a nice beverage to down that Manhattan-sized crow with

even if true, it's still a good amount of RAM left

I'm clearly missing something. Would this not mean that it has the same amount of available RAM as the One but DDR5 instead of DDR3?

edit: I'm not missing anything, and that's actually the worst case scenario:

A Microsoft insider tells us that the engineers behind the Xbox One specifically chose 3GB in order to allow the background platform to evolve over a ten-year life-cycle - it's very hard to add features if the pool of available RAM is reduced from its initial level. The reserved RAM allocation there is set in stone, and is unlikely to change.

However, sources close to Sony suggest that the PS4 approach is perhaps more flexible - the current allocation in terms of both CPU cores and memory could be reduced once the operating system is complete and then streamlined. In short, while there is no guarantee of change in the future, Sony is at least leaving the door open to the opportunity and the R&D team has experience in reducing the OS footprint - just as it did on PlayStation 3.

  10. Xbox One has DDR3 but also has fast esRAM to help it out.

In truth it's... not exactly a wash, but not that far off.
