You can force a disconnect at any time from Xbox Live by logging out of your profile, which is a three-input command from the guide pop-up. Even if that was not the case, some people really DO have lag/standby/disconnect switches set up in between their Internet connection and the console.

I've never understood why, after all this time, games still can't handle disconnections properly.
