I wouldn't even give them the sweat off my balls, let alone a half month's rent. When you're on a month-to-month, nobody owes anyone anything.
Is there anyawy that you find some old thrown out carpet? Maybe roll it up and leave it in the room. So if they ask, you can be like "there is the new carpet, I will put in later"
then leave and never do it

We'll see, I might pull the offer of a half-month if I catch a bunch of bullshit when I go home tonight.
As of right now I've stated (to the roomates) that I'd send the half month to the landlord, I'll get some signatures on paper if I leave a check with the roomates to buy carpet or whatever. I have no intention of speaking to any of these people after Sunday ever again, and the USPS can handle my mail forwarding.
