I've met people from Poland and Italy that have lived in this country for 50 years and don't speak a goddamn word of English. I've never met a Mexican who has been here more than 5 years that I can't have a basic conversation with. Why is this all of a sudden a crisis, exactly?
Like I get that it's frustrating when there's a communication barrier with a large group of people, but the Mexicans have learned English faster than every major immigrant group before them including the Italians, Germans, and even the Irish, and close to 100% of their kids born here speak English fluently by age 10. It's just not a real problem.
I mean there were groups that came to this country and spoke another language for generations. I mean my family was in this country for almost 150 years before they switched over from German to English. The Mexicans are actually doing a fantastic job of learning English very quickly, but they still get a ridiculous amount of shit over the issue. No perspective.
