Rap Video Game Samples

Ever since I started listening to rap a few years ago, I’ve always been on the lookout for rap songs that sample from video games. I know that there is a shitload of them out there – rappers (especially underground ones) love to sample shit from the NES/SNES era. Here’s a couple of my faves:

Del The Funkee Homosapien – “Protoculture”
Probably the most well known one on TNL. Megaman Legends can’t be mentioned without someone else adding in that they had to buy a map for it. I remember being pretty amazed back in the day when this first came out by how knowledgeable Del comes off in this track. I think the sample is from Darkstalkers, but I’m not sure.

People Under The Stairs – “Gamin’ on Ya”

PUTS has been one of my favorite groups for a long time. I’ve been really into them ever since I first listened to Question in the Form of an Answer back in the day. If you haven’t checked em out, you really should. Anyway, this song is from their FUN-DMC album. I really dig the samples and lyrics on this track – what is with it with rappers and having sex with girls in burger joint bathrooms?

Some sick Chrono Trigger samples... Wiz is whack as fuck but I like this song. Dom Kennedy is the shit.

Army of the Pharaohs - "Bloody Tears" Not a fan of these dudes lryics but I love their beats

Some super Mario shit... This one actually couldn't be released because they didn't clear the sample. Landed em a record deal though.

One more, I flipped my shit when I saw PUTS do this one live. I asked Thes One personally if he was ever going to release this beat but he said it's a live only type thing. Those dudes are so dope, I swear to god. Noone's uploaded a good video of it on youtube except for this short clip
