So Congress apparently wants to have a say in this bounty fiasco. FUCK OFF CONGRESS. ESPECIALLY YOU, SENATOR "BIG, FAT, MONSTER, HOLY SHIT IT'S TOO BIG" DICK DURBIN.
FUCK OFF!
A ring and the best offensive year ever would be where I would start.
What's bullshit about the Saints thing is that it has absolutely nothing to do with knocking guys out of the game or late hits. It's 100% about circumventing the cap. And anything else Goodell says makes him the lying scumbag. Think about this offseason. He's sabotaged the two richest teams in the league and then stripped the coaches from one of the most talented. Maybe he has money on Green Bay or the Giants.

You honestly don't think there's a problem with the Bounty thing?
Oh, I think it's a problem in terms of paying players to injure others - I'm not opposed to incentivees for sacks, interceptions, and overall good play, but it's one that is and can be handled in-house. Congress, especially this piece of excrement, should shut up and focus on WAY MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES than this shit. If anything, they should direct their attention to the cap penalty issue. If any situation deserves federal attention, it's that one.

Was talking to Yoshi.
The cap shouldn't be circumvented. It's collectively bargained. If they don't like it, change it.
I think the punishment is about 2 things:
1. NFL doing CYA - the fact is that the NFL is under a lot of pressure right now. It all looks great on the outside but the long-term prospects of the NFL are very up in the air right now. The fact that players are turning into vegetables in their 40's, or, like Chris Henry, are in their late 20s but have a 70 year old's brain, is becoming more and more obvious. The NFL has tried to sweep this under the rug for decades and have exposed themselves to a huge amount of liability in the process. They need to get this stuff under control and, in a court of law, show they've done what they could to protect players within the confines of a violent game. Bounty systems are by definition out of control.
2. Goodell wagging his dick - we all know this guy is out of control. Payton lied to Rog in 2010 about this and now he's paying for it. Same thing as Vick. If he copped to it in 2010 then the punishment probably would've been similar to the Patriots' videotaping thing.

Adding to Diff's point:
All this concussion stuff could also get parents to start keeping their kids out of football. That's a super long term thing but it's got to be part of the thinking right? Nobody at the NFL wants to put the sport on the boxing path.

The grievance has been filed regarding the collusion. I like John Mara, who needs to hurry up and die, felt it necessary to pipe up and say that he thought the penalties were proper.
