Thread: TNL Is Ten Years Young

  1. Wait. So do I, but I shouldn't.

  2. I remember joking around with MarkRyan and Bahn in GF_Tavern Chat. Oh the fun times.

bahn lured me here to help set up vbulletin for this site (because I had previous experience with it via fighters.net) and for that I apologize, but it was a good idea at the time

e: it might have been Reno too I don't remember

  4. LOL. vBulletin! Oh man, "fun" experiences with that. I believe we tried some other forum software too which didn't work too well.

  5. Heh, speaking of Reno. Here is one of his old avatars featured in the classic TNL design:

  6. TNL told me I have an achievement for this occasion.

    Wacky!

Where's the one for annually promoting a shitty, overpriced science fiction convention?

  7. There should be an achievement for people who don't know what a GameGo is, don't get half the references from "when TNL was good," but stick around anyways.

  8. Still a few months away until I'm officially here ten years (join date: August 4, 2002). Man, time flies. You can thank Stibbons/omfgninjas for bringing me here. He told me about this place while I was editing the video game section of 411wrestling.com (which later became 411mania.com). TNL is still the greatest video game message forum on the internet. Here's to ten more years!

  9. I looked on the waybackmachine website to see if they had a copy of the gamefan page when I started but I couldn't find one.

I got here from Gamefan mag > Gamefan online board thing (I don't know what it was. It was a pretty primitive BBS and before shidoshi or animefan). > Gamefan chat > Gamefan dumps the old chat for some other garbage, but I stick with #GF_Tavern > chat slowly dies over the next couple of years. Someone brings up GameGo > Join Gamego. > Leave gamego because it is mostly shitheads patting themselves on the back for spending too much on imported games. > come back after gamego joins with TNL.

Somewhere in there I think I aggravated shidoshi on ICQ and he blocked me. And I wrote an article for Got Next and it is somehow now a TNL article.

It has been interesting watching everything grow. Like how Morrigan made a metal encyclopedia that was edited by users way before it was common. I think this was 2002. Wikipedia only came out in 2001. And I'm somewhat sure Shidoshi started what would be the US image board culture. He had a picture archive for some game characters on his website long long ago. It was built well. Not that bullshit with Ryoko pictures on one page with flame gifs. The CG Anime shrines were a pretty blatant rip off of that. Which were one of the first attempts at a massive image board. Then separately japan came up with 2chan in 1999 and moot ripped off 2chan to make a fluid version of what the CGshrines were doing.
