Thread: Takedown (Kickstarter Shooter)

  1. Takedown (Kickstarter Shooter)

The lead designer of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and Halo: Reach wants to make a spiritual successor to the original Rainbow Six and SWAT4. A strategic, small scale, squad-based, close-quarters combat simulation heavy on the planning and tactical decision making rather than running and gunning and cinematic tropes. The idea is solid, as are the guy's credentials, and this project deserves to be made.

Unfortunately, when the project launched his pitch was sort of unfocused and a lot of casual readers didn't really understand that he didn't want to make another Call of Duty. They relaunched this morning and it's a lot clearer, but there's only a week left to make it happen.

    Anyway, worth a look.

  2. I really like how many things are getting Kickstart-ed, it seems like the perfect kind of model for "if you want it, throw some money at it and hope it happens".
That being said, fuck Halo Reach, I would have been much more excited for this had he never mentioned having a connection to that flaming piece of shit.

I'm gonna wait and see how the DoubleFine one works out before I think of putting anything down on any other Kickstarter.

Plus I have like 0 interest in this.

    That's a pretty long wait...

  6. Everyone is Kickstarting everything now. Fuck em

  7. Can't wait to see how people react when one of these things turns out to be a turd. The game in your mind is always awesome.

  8. Oh, this is a game now? The guy was portraying this as some kind of crazy prototype earlier, to be used to pitch a game to real investors. It didn't sound very well thought-out, to be honest.

In other news, I really miss Rainbow Six 3.

    edit:
$200,000 will bring TAKEDOWN to Alpha. Private investors are lined up, but unsure of the market for an old-school tac shooter. A successful Kickstarter campaign will convince them that this is a viable market. Along with their investment, pre-sales of the game (A $15 Kickstarter pledge is a significant discount on the final game price) will also contribute to completion of the project. Kickstarters will have access to a closed Alpha.
    Yeah, fuck this project.

Sometimes in your mission to be the biggest cynic, you say some really goofy shit, you know.

No one here is naive enough to think everyone of these is going to come out awesome. In fact the whole idea here is that by making small contributions we can afford to take chances that publishers can't.

When publishers front a couple million of their own money, they don't really want to gamble, so they only go for things that resemble other products out there that are already making money. We don't have to do that, because it's only $15, and if it sucks then oh well, maybe the next one will be good.

I don't know why you think we're all a bunch of children who think every pitch is a foolproof plan and that our beliefs will be shattered the first time this is challenged.

So basically, you're a venture capitalist with the risk (as small as it may be) but none of the reward.
