Thread: Food For Thought

    Food For Thought

This thread is for posting ideas, studies, and lectures we find on the rest of the internet that we find interesting and think other TNLers might enjoy.

It is not so much for discussion as it is to encourage thought.

If something does spark a lot of interest, maybe a mod could break it off into a separate thread.

If you disagree with a linked video, study, lecture, I encourage you to combat it with a video, study, lecture and not pull an IP/Frog and simply logic it to death.

  2. Well this is always a brainfuck of an idea: The Monty Hall Problem

For lectures, ted.com is full of great stuff.

I work in the actuarial field and have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours of my life studying statistics and probability. I understand the logic of the Monty Hall Problem and it's still a mindfuck. It's not intuitive at all.

  7. The example with 1,000,000 doors kinda helped me digest it.

  8. It's just one of those things that, while true, feels wrong.

    edit: another example: .999999 repeating = 1.

It is conditional probability. The easiest way to understand this problem is boil it down to whether you want to pick 2 doors to open or 1 door to open, from the beginning. Of course you would pick the 2 doors which is what you are doing by switching.
