Rayman Legends Lead Game Designer Emile Morel has said that you'll have to play as Murphy the frog rather than Rayman in a good portion of the game's single player mode.
Rather than playing as Rayman in these levels, the limbless legend will be automatically controlled by the CPU and you have to protect him as Murphy. The other levels will be classic Rayman levels.
Asked by Nintendo World Report if you could play Rayman Legends on your own, Morel said: "That's a question we get asked a lot. How do you play the game alone and can you play it with the GamePad? The answer is yes, you can. You play controlling Murphy with the GamePad and on the screen on the TV and also on the screen of the Wii U GamePad you'll have an automatic Rayman controlled by an AI. You have to open the paths for him, you have to kill enemies for him to make sure he can survive. You are the protector of Rayman."
He added: "Not the whole game is like this - you have specific levels for Murphy and the GamePad and more classic levels when you are playing as Rayman from beginning to the end. Half of the game, maybe not half but a good portion of the game, you'll have to play as Murphy."
According to Morel, it has been designed this way to make sure that players use the Wii U GamePad even if they are playing alone.
"We want to make sure that when people buy the Wii U and buy this game they can play with the GamePad even if they don't have friends at home to play with them. It's important that they have the new device and the new gameplay experience."
