  3. Thanks Shou.

  4. I check out a place called gamesniped every couple of days just to see what silly thing collectors are willing to pay way too much money for.
It's insane what some games sell for. Do you think these are being bought by people who actually care about the games or industry or is it like the comics speculator boom of the '90s?

I think it's more that people who are into this stuff are reaching the age where they can afford more, and a few of them have a lot of it to throw around.

I think the whole retro gaming price thing is going to peak in the next few years then drop like a rock when the next big popular gaming thing comes, whenever that is.

Someone offer me a stupid amount of money for Earthbound while the price is fucking ridiculous!

Because they were coherent, didn't require a $100 investment each month to follow the story and didn't retcon everyone's history every few years for some "earth-shattering" event that was all but forgotten 12 months later?

Well, the thing to keep in mind is that nowadays there are far more than just superhero comics widely available. That wasn't the case in the 80s.

I think that being the appropriate age for comics in the early to mid 90s was what turned me off the majority of the medium, because the only comics that seemed to be available were either superhero comics that fit your description to a T, antihero comics that seemed to focus more on packing as much blood and gore as possible into each issue rather than anything resembling a story, and Disney comics. I tended to buy the lattermost.

  8. Elfquest, Cerebus, Fish Police, and Beanworld all say Hi. The 80s was where today's market grew from, and while good stuff wasn't quite so plentiful, there was still some out there.

Oh, I'm not saying it didn't exist. That's why I used the phrase "widely available." I'm saying that it wasn't exactly prominent, particularly if you were a dopey, ignorant teenager walking into a comics shop. Now there's stuff like The Walking Dead or Irredeemable front-and-center.

  10. Still,um, no?
Maybe it was just the shops you went to?
Because mine were full of indys. 1984 saw the debut of a little comic about some radioactive testudines. By 1985, indy publishers were a dime a dozen. If you went to the comics rack at your local grocery store you might not see the stuff, but dedicated shops (again, maybe not in your area) were chock full of the things. Everyone was trying to hit pay dirt with the next TMNT.
