  2. Demo incoming. And for your consideration, a dialogue sample from this masterpiece:

At some point in the game, Jake needs to be a bridge to carry you across into a new section of the game. But you have to wait until Jake wants to be a bridge in order to do it. The dialogue I wrote around it—which I'm not sure if this is going to end up in the game because I just wrote this the other day and it was kind of late—[is as follows:]

Hot Dog Princess would say, "Jake, before you go can you do me a kindness?"

    Jake would say, "Sure HDP."

And Hot Dog Princess would say, "Make your body into a bridge for me. A goopy flesh bridge so I can walk all over you. I wanna smoosh my tiny hot dog feet into your nasty back!"

Jake says, "No that's super weird."

And she says, "Please just think about it. Keep it in your mind."

Jake says, "Well now I have to, because it's gross."

And then when you get to the bridge portion of the game, Jake will freak out and remember this crazy Hot Dog bridge fantasy and say, "Oh Glob! Hot Dog Princess' bridge fantasy is eating away at my psyche. I have to know if I'm into being a bridge. Finn, walk across my back."

And Finn says, "I am comfortable with this."

And then they walk across the bridge together and Jake says, "Phew, I can safely say I'm not into being a bridge. It's not a bad thing, but it's not something I'd want to do over gorges willy nilly. What I'm saying is: I'll be a bridge. Only sometimes, at designated markers."

And Finn says, "Ok, that's very helpful."

And Jake interrupts and says, "But I don't like it. I don't like being a bridge. I don't like it."

  6. This game seems like a cash grab. Every level I've seen in screens is just.. flat

I'm waiting for the demo myself before preordering, but Wayforward has been on a roll with me lately.

  8. So, let's just get this out of the way:

Like every other WayForward game, Adventure Time is brimming with charm. Excellent music, animation that is amazing, and adhering to the show's visual style while building dungeons and such around it in a way that feels like the show, but gamey. It all clicks really well.

Also like every WayForward game, some little things feel a bit off. Like text that's way too close to its box edges. Odd kerning and leading. Menus that don't feel as intuitive as they could be. Sometimes the music goes from being crystal clear to muffled for some reason (have to check on headphones if this the game, or maybe the 3DS speakers). So...some oddities in the delivery.

Gameplay-wise it's Zelda 2 in everything but the part that made Zelda 2 a classic - the difficulty. Adventure Time has been a big pushover so far. Enemy attack patterns are largely easy to see and anything that isn't (like bosses), is easy to brute-force through with the tons of helpful item drops in the game.

It's a nice game for $30, really shows off how hand drawn 2D can look great in 3D, and is just a fun, charming realization of the show. I wouldn't consider it something that will stand the test of time, like Zelda 2, but I'm still early in.

  9. I mostly agree with everything. The game is fun, but it's a little on the easy side, and the quests involve going back and forth between two characters to deliver something to another. That's fine, but some areas are annoying to go through. Also, i get the whole Zelda 2 thing, but the overworld enemy encounters just feel like a waste of time, like the ones in Gargoyle's Quest, or (more relevant) Sigma Star Saga.
The characters and dialogue are 100%, though, and the graphics, animation, and 3D all look really nice. If you like Adventure Time, you'll really enjoy this, but if you don't, you probably won't ever play it anyway.

I don't notice anything weird on the sound, it's coming through my speakers just fine, and the text doesn't bother me at all. Maybe if you're a real font or graphic design snob it'll poop your britches. Us freds will never notice.

The font is honestly my biggest complaint. It's sooooo ugly, especially for a show with this much style. Pretty unforgivable.
