Gunstar Heroes is straight-up okay. Cool bosses, lame stages, aesthetically solid. It's crazy to put it in the same league as Shinobi III or Revenge or Hard Corps or even Bloodlines.

Shinobi III has some crazy boring stages, like that elevator part which bent the passage of time to make five minutes seem like thirty. I also really dislike how little of the level you can see on-screen at once, which makes me feel like I'm stumbling blindly around (I also don't like Sonic 2 on Game Gear for the same reason). It's not terrible, but it's not great either.

Revenge is the best Shinobi game on the Genesis, IMO. I always thought it was better balanced than Shinobi III and it has some great Koshiro tunes.
I really like what I've played of Shadow Dancer too, but I'm nowhere near completing it.

Hard Corps has amazing replay value too. I need to fire that shit up again.
You almost had me, since Rondo is technically 8-bit. However, I'm not sure I'd take Hard Corps over some of the Metal Slugs.

The Metal Slug games are fun but I never understood how anyone thought they were in the same league as Contra or even Gunstar.
