I grew to like it on the Turbografx, but I never beat it.
Yeah, the Genesis port of Turrican is utterly mangled. Perhaps the worst change is that turret enemies now fire slow bullets at you each time you hit them. This makes the game unreasonably difficult, as Turrican has no hit stun and so a bullet damages you for as long as it is touching you. It's a great game on Amiga, but every port of it to other systems (barring C64, where it actually originated, but nobody remembers that) lies somewhere between "disaster" and merely "bad."

I really hated the Genesis port of Turrican. Back in the day when my brother used to let us use his Genesis while he was at church it was either Sonic, Phelios, or Turrican. I finished the other two so had no choice but to slog my way through Turrican for entertainment and hated every moment of it.

Ok, I will now definitely try both flavors of turrican. Can't resist.
That's not a port. The two Super Turrican games on SNES are original, as is the confusingly-titled Super Turrican on NES.
I tried it. It's good so far but nothing mind-blowing. I went somewhere I shouldn't have and now I'm king of the monkeys.

Mega Turrican is excellent, the soundtrack still holds up. I thought for the longest time that Super Turrican 2 never saw release....and by then it was bat-ass crazy in price.
Made it to the lab in the jungle, this rolling turd boss killed me.
I don't like the controls. I prefer having a button hold to shoot without moving over a toggle. Switching weapons is annoying and using bombs is the worst.
