Thread: Sega Genesis: The Superior Versions

  1. #571
Gameplay ranks higher than visuals for me. I like SNES Aladdin a bit more than the Genesis one. Having to hold down a button to run felt unnecessary, though.

I like them both. The Genesis version has by far the better presentation but it has those Virgin/Shiny trademark convoluted level designs and slippery controls.

The SNES title is a more tightly designed game but my heart likes the Genesis version more. Luckily I'm good enough that I found both games to be equally easy, so that wasn't an issue.

I had forgotten that this game had an item shop dude in the levels

  4. Why waste time modding a model 2 Genny when you can get a model 1 for $20?

    Because I can.

    Ugly chicks need love too.

  7. I like Magical Quest better than both the NES and Genesis Aladdin. Quackshot on the Genesis is good stuff too.

  8. SFII SCE: Not all it could have been! Until now.

The Genesis version should've been the superior one. Thanks to Stef's sound driver, the voices in this hack do not suffer the "post gargling with a mug of shredded glass fragments" syndrome. Pyron retouched the colors to look more like the arcade as well. With these two hacks in place, it's better.

While the BGM is better than the SNES (at least IMO), Capcom couldn't code a Genesis PCM sound driver for shit.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  9. That's cool. I've been working on modding the hilarious beta ROM of SFII for years as a sort of rainy day hobby, so this is actually pretty interesting to me.
The Genesis has a pretty limiting colour palette, so it can be quite a challenge to do even simple tweaks.
I don't get why Capcom ditched the heavy damage music from the arcade and went with the up-tempo effect from the SNES game.
If you play the beta ROM, you'll notice it has different music when either player is near K.O., just like the arcade.

Did the new sound driver improve the music because those drums sound like the arcade game. I remember the Genesis version having poor drum samples while that beta version had those sweet CPS drums.
