What's the best way to play I-III?

If you don't mind 1 and 2 being too easy, play the translated SFC versions. It takes a lot of the grinding out, and it looks great. I would assume that's the best way of playing 3 as well, but I haven't played either the NES or SFC ones yet.

2 still kinda sucks though, either way.

If the games were available on the VC or the 3DS eShop, I would definitely say to get them there. Otherwise, why is it better to give some fat hoarder idiot online money that Nintendo or Square will never see so you can play an old ass game?
