Konami Super Nintendo day!
The boss gave me the day off since we were slow and I have vacation time to burn and for some reason I felt like playing Super Nintendo. The fact that I played all Konami games was a coincidence.
Super Castlevania 4 (SFC version)
I picked it up for like 4 bucks on ebay a while back to see what the differences were since the US version is censored. Outside of one stage, there is very little difference, so if you have the US version don't bother. The music in the game is still godly, but the game itself isn't nearly as good as the 16 bit Castlevanias on other systems.
Gradius 3 : I've never really played this other than a quick 5 minutes when I bought it a few months back, but I thought I would give it a shot, slowdown and all. It's actually pretty good, and it's almost like slowdown is a part of the design and you can summon it at will. I think I got to the end, but the last? stage broke me.
TMNT 4: Fuck yeah, still awesome.

I haven't played much of the arcade game, but I could see that. I don't think I could get past the easter island head stage at full speed.
You know that thing that comes and steals your options? Fuck that thing! In the ear!
I had made it to the fire stage, where you really need your options, without dying and fully powered up. That thing comes and takes ALL of my options. I was dead in seconds.
I really wish that the option thief could be killed. Setting up an ambush for it would be fun- and who doesn't thirst for a taste of revenge on the bastard?
"Beuuark Beuuark Beuuark!" Yep, here it comes again. "Yeah, just come on over you little bitch, I've got something extra for you this time... a couple of missiles! BWAHAHAHA!" This is something I'd like in Gradius VI or Salamander 3, in the event that hell freezes over and Konami actually puts out either of these.
Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
I was in a beat em up mood and didn't feel like playing more TMNT games, so I popped in Streets of Rage 2. I normally play on Hard, but I feel like a challenge and set it for Hardest. I'm not sure if I've ever played at this difficulty level before.
Enemies EVERYWHERE! This is an entirely new game! Waves and waves of baddies with increased health. The bosses aren't any more difficult one on one but they usually have waves of badguys fighting at the same time. The difficulty is somewhat offset by the fact that you get a lot of extra lives from points, and if you manage to get to the end without continuing I bet you could get a score of 999,999.
I do pretty well for the first few stages, but stage 6 takes its toll on me, and I just flat out got my ass kicked on stage 7. So close...
Maybe I've been playing too much SNES, but I'm really impressed by how many bad guys were on screen at once without a hint of flicker or slowdown. Even TMNT Hyperstone Heist slowed down a bit when there were a ton of foot and mousers on screen.
The SNES technically allows for more sprites on screen (128 vs. 80 for Genny), but the Genesis had a processor that was twice as fast (7.6mhz vs. 3.6mhz SNES), so that probably explains why Genesis action games typically had more stuff going on.
If you compare the later Final Fights and Streets of Rage, you'll notice that Final Fight's sprites are way bigger, more colorful and more detailed, but there's less characters on screen in Final Fight compared to Streets of Rage. Streets of Rage compensates by using much smaller sprites and flooding the screen with enemies.
SOR2 also added considerably more awesome than the SNES FF's.
