Thread: What Are You Playing (Fall 2012)

  1. Castlevania: LoS (PS3) - I bought this over a year ago on clearance for $8 and I finally decided to open it up and give it a go this weekend. I think the game looks great and the controls are pretty tight. I really want to get further in the game this week.

  2. Speaking of Streets of Rage, I was playing through SOR3 this weekend and that game has not aged well at all. I remember it just being "meh" back in the day, but it's pretty shit now. Terrible music, bland enemies and level design. The only cool thing about SOR3 was all the easter eggs they hid in there. I give them an A for coming up with 4 different endings and multiple secret characters.

As usual, I have too many balls in the air, despite finishing up Hitman over the weekend:

Jet Set Radio (PSV) - It's ridiculous that I can play this game perfectly on a portable. Unfortunately, I need to recapture my skills from the early aughts, as I have struggled with nearly every level so far. For whatever reason I am having more trouble than I remember actually hitting the grind points and not over/under shooting them. I hope it's just rust, and it could be, since I have not yet finished the first area.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona (PSP) - I won't let myself buy Persona 4: The Golden for full price until I catch up in the series, so I've started to make amends. I made it through the factory with little trouble, but I am starting to get concerned that I am not gathering Personas. I've passed two velvet rooms without the ability to fuse anything, and I am worried/confident that will soon lead to a difficulty wall.

Under Defeat HD (PS3) - I'm really happy to have this one back in the fold, as I sold off my DC copy when this was announced. It's still hard as hell, and I need to either get my TE stick modded or get a PS3 stick. The trusty old Neo Pad just isn't doing it for me with this one. I also wish there was a vertical HD mode. I have to choose between tate and the new mode, so my TV is going to be doing regular acrobatics.

WipEout 2048 (PSV) - This series finally clicked with me, and I am not sure why. I had played a couple of the PS1 versions and had bought all of the PSN iterations, but I just never got dialed in. This one finally hooked me, though I hate some of your times as well as the "B-Ri has beaten your time" messages. I've never been a big one for online leaderboards, so if I get the Elite level done, I'm not going back for e-peen.

I need to move on to the next great PC excursion too. The leading candidates are Max Payne 3 and The Walking Dead I think. Whichever loses out will get knocked out during my holiday vacation in a couple weeks.

Call me a heretic, but I can play most shooters just fine with the regular PS3 pad as long as they don't require rapid fire button presses. Which is good, since my multiconsole stick is broken and I don't feel like fixing it right now.

  5. WO2048 is my favorite game in the entry since WipeOut 3 (or wip3out I guess). I don't know why. It's awesome.

  6. Re-acquired Dragon's Dogma and restarted it yesterday. After spending significantly more time with it than the first time I turned it on, I started to like it a bit more. Some of the systems are kind of cumbersome (MENUS, YOU SUCK!) while other things like being able to explore and climb around the world and architecture is great. The combat is growing on me a little more as it goes along as well. Story is still very "I don't care at all!", but I've played a LOT of great stories this year so that's fine by me. This one will be quite a grind to 1000/1000, but it's one that I've already decided is getting 100%ed (any game given as a gift I want to 100%, as a personal rule). ARBM was, as usual, very apt with his description when he said it's an ugly, brown game.

This was happening all over the place for me and I became enraged and turned it off. Don't know if the controls just aren't translating to the Vita's sticks, or this is how it always was. I do know I don't have time for this nonsense.

I'm pretty sure it was always that way with JSR. I'm actually a bit better now than I was before, which still isn't saying much! JET SET RADIOOOOO

Yosh, when it comes to Persona 1 the flow is generally like get to a new area, find what makes every enemy type happy through trial and error or by looking it up, and get one of each of their cards. Once you have their cards combat gets easier. If you need to you can whittle down big groups by talking to the monster type you want to get rid of, they'll see you have their card, view you as friendly and run off. Then you can kill the rest for xp and whatnot. Once you're done leveling you can just go to the Velvet Room and mix up some shit. Just get a good mix of abilities in your group and you should be able to handle everything fine.

P1 is the worst because every system is just clunky enough to be kind of annoying. The whole demon interaction SMT thing is hilarious but kind of a pain. The worst is the whole grid thing in combat, ugh.

P3 and 4 are such radically different games that I'd suggest jumping into 3 to get ready for 4 instead. It's what I did, and I'm crazy about shit!

    Mark danced crazy!

  9. Skipping Persona 2 would be a mistake. The story is just completely nuts and it has some of the best characters in any game, period. Almost everything that I dislike about the first game is either removed or modified (permanent isometric view, first person dungeon exploration, slow grid-based combat, poor character development). They also arranged the original soundtrack instead of completely replacing it like in P1P. It's modern enough that it doesn't feel clunky, but definitely retains the trademark old school SMT difficulty and atmosphere.

Best game(s) in the series, IMO.

Yoshi, definitely follow Mzo's advice and just hang in there. The main quest is only about 20 hours long, and that's taking a fair amount of grinding into account. I played through all three games in preparation for 4 and it enhanced the experience. 3 and 4 have very tenuous ties to the preceding two games (for example, the Kirijo Group is an offshoot of the Nanjo Conglomerate), but they're there and easy to miss without comprehensive knowledge of Persona as a whole.

  10. Skipping Persona 2 would be a big mistake. Playing Persona games after Persona 2 would be the worst mistake.
