There may be social pressures to it ("you have to do this on your own time, but it would mean a lot of new opportunities"), but being on salary does not legally make it okay to work unpaid OT. Now, they can ask you to be "OT exempt" and sign a contract/waiver, but you don't have to, and having a salary doesn't mean you won't get extra pay for extra time put in.

At least that's how it is in CA.
