Even if they dumped $35 million into advertising (I highly doubt it), it still made almost 3 times (worldwide) what they put into it at the box office. I'm sure it sold a few dvds as well.

Best Picture largely due to a word of mouth campaign (though they did put out a HELL of a lot of screeners for it, there were multiples kicking around the office).
Caught a nice wave, largely due to being a really good movie.
