Thread: Star Wars: Episode VII

  1. I just want the next set of movies do well and not have convoluted elements ala Metal Gear Solid 2.

It was. I could see that changing as Lucas shifts his role.

  3. I always considered the Thrawn Trilogy Ep 7-9.

But those are the only Stars Wars books I read.

There is some really good stuff in there and some really bad stuff, and a whole lot of decent stuff if you're a big fan of the universe.
I grew up getting into the EU as a kid, reading many books, guides, etc. Some of the coolest stuff, I thought, were the stories set alongside the timeline in the movies (Shadows of the Empire), stuff set in the past (Exar Kun) and the continued war against the Empire (X-Wing series, Truce at Bakura, Thrawn, etc.) after Return of the Jedi. I eventually kind of fell out of keeping up with all the new stuff but I took the time to get up to speed last year by going on the wiki.

Here's my problem with the EU in regards to around the time the new movies are supposed to be set:
The Empire is long gone, the Rebel Alliance was successful and became something greater. Han and Leia got married, had children and Luke Skywalker became a Jedi Master. Happy Ending. Instead, it's constant conflict with absolutely no resolution with more and more enemies and more and more people falling to the Dark Side. It makes the struggle of the original trilogy completely pointless and without any true implication of serious victory. Essentially, it has become typical comic book fodder that continues to reintroduce conflicts for the sake of keeping the universe alive and relevant in modern times.

In my opinion, the progression of the EU after the events of RotJ has gone too far. Originally, it fit into the timeline well but it's just become an endless cycle with no purposeful end in sight. I wouldn't mind if they borrow certain elements for the new trilogy, but I'd like to see their considerations more on the minimal side.

Sam Jackson Mode. Ford and Jackson would be the greatest cast for any non-porno movie ever by themselves.

Would you really want a happy ending where everything is perfect and nothing bad could ever happen again? Take wanting that out of the equation, but do you honestly expect it? This ain't no Disney movie where evil is banished forever. When has overcoming a struggle ever led to an everlasting utopia? Translating your argument to the real world would be like expecting no more war or struggle after the end of WWII. The Nazis have been defeated and there is now world peace! There is never a perfect and infinite resolution.

  7. And there are extended periods of relative peace in the EU. They just didn't write a whole lot about it because who really wants to read about Leia working in the government and Han relaxing at home.

Star Trek/Star Wars crossover fan fiction is better than this movie is going to be. I've got $5 on it. Anyone want to take that action?

  9. Right here. Who's the official judge?

*Because I really don't want to read any fan fiction ever again.
