I don't know if it was brought up here or somewhere else so if you've seen my thoughts on it already, my apologies:
Use of an unreliable narrator (Artoo & Chewie) is one of the best ways to convey the sort of secret things that guy talks about. There are a lot of logic leaps in his theory but if you take it to its core (them being the agents and couriers of information) it could work. There would need to be supporting scenes, though, in the coming sequels. Otherwise it's just unnecessary subterfuge and speculation.
Also, it's unlikely Lucas put that much thought into it.
I think it's a stretch to call that a character.
