I think they probably needed Captain Marvel (and maybe Ant-Man and the Wasp too) to drop in-between for narrative reasons, though.
They need some way to get you to watch the credits in their other releases.
I'd love to be wrong, but I highly doubt Ant Man and Wasp are going to have anything necessary in them connecting the two infinity wars. These movies will be the movie equivalent of the tie in issues Marvel puts out with their event books.
No one pulls a Wildc.a.t.s/ Aliens, though they probably should at least once.
I could see them popping in the micro-verse then coming out to find everybody zapped. Both Ant Man and Captain Marvel are going to be table-setting for Infinity Gauntlet or whatever they call it, even if that's not the focus of the movie.
I'm thinking they were in the microverse for some reason (looking for Janet?) when everyone got zapped, but it might not be so. Pym and everyone from Lang's team is still around, and I doubt the randomness of what Thanos did was kind enough to spare EVERYONE for this movie. It would be a tad too convenient.

Yeah. Any Marvel character not in the MCU makes me wonder why I should care. Hollywood can’t do heroes the way Marvel can.
I saw this movie last night and it caught me completely off guard. The fights in this movie were way better and more visceral than the last few movies (Cap v. Ironman was the last good fight I think). I’m curious to see what the next movie has in store.
