They don't. CDs are pretty useless, but old people love them for some reason.

Depending on your income level and marital status, you could put ~$5,500 into a Roth IRA to avoid taxation. I'm not aware of CDs having that treatment, but they might.

The CD is just the holder for the type(roth). Old people do love CD's though, and fucking passbooks.
