I think it depends on your point of view. To sell more of the things, yeah having a game dedicated to them makes the most sense. Them being an accessory that you don't have to drop money on if you don't want to is nice for the consumer. I've heard good things about the Skylanders games, but I'm not about to try them out cause I have no interest in dropping money into figures. Though I did buy Chop Chop but that's because his intro was my favorite one to animate when I worked on Giants.
So it's your fault Giants was the weakest of the series. I kid; that's actually really cool. My daughter will flip her shit when I tell her I "know" someone who helped make the game.
I am also of the mind that an accessory that works with multiple games/series/genres is preferable to a required purchase that only works with one. That was why I was trying the sales job with my daughter that backfired.
It just dawned on me that there is no Captain Olimar. They picked Wii Fit Bitch over Olimar. Unfortunately, I'm sure they'll correct this egregious error and cost me another $13, alongside Slippy, Falco, Peppy, and ten different color Yoshis in waves 2-237.
Wii Fit Bitch is cooler, so that's fine.

They already announced every character in Smash Bros is coming eventually, so yeah, you'll get your Olimar.
Wait a minute... in light of the ESRB leak, that means we're going to see Amiibos for R.O.B. and Duck Hunt Dog!
