Hero, you have to turn the online settings on yourself. I think you can do it from any of the settings menus.
You'll see random, sweaty Links appear randomly on your map. Their level determines the difficulty of the stage. As far as I've seen the only prizes they give out are gold level mats and high rank level 3 weapons for whoever has them unlocked.
Okay good point on Nintendo's abandonment rates. Between Amiibo and e-Reader though, I'll at least have a nifty toy on my desk if Amiibo support is dropped.
