You're right, simple is pointless.
I was playing the first flying section last night and got really pissed at how often the foreground objects at the bottom of the screen obscure the little plane dudes and their shots.
I also don't get the point of "simple" mode. You don't get the contract by doing it, and the boss patterns/forms are different so it doesn't help you learn anything.
I was in a game store today that had the ost playing. We got to talking about the game and the clerk described it as dark soulsesk...

Its a touch too much imo. Some things are a little too 8 bit, or early 16 bit. I would have liked a recover mechanism that allowed me to use my skill to save my ass. Or a few more seconds of invincibility after a hit, or coming out of a super. In that regard, I don't feel that it is as polished as the late 16 bit games it emulates.
On the other hand, thank god cuphead moves as well as he does. The game would be garbage if he moved like the cement trucks of the early snes titles.
