Thread: Dragon Quest + Dynasty Warriors = Dragon Quest Heroes

  1. The hostage thing worked out so well for Darkstalkers.

  2. This looks rad.

  3. I love that guy's voice. Looking forward to playing the localization. I wonder if 8-4 or Richard Honeywood are involved.

  4. Not enough Transformers in this for ya?

  5. So it turns out this is single-player only, without even couch co-op. WTF Koei, that's been one of the selling points of these games since the beginning.

  6. Dynasty Warriors 2 was single player. Dynasty Warriors 3 had two player coop, but it was really shitty split screen. When a buddy and I played, whoever was on the bottom screen would die in no time.
It's probably gotten better since then.

  7. Okay so almost the beginning. :P (The first one I played was 3XL, without base 3.)

    Donk

  9. Beat this today. I really enjoyed it.

Biggest difference between this and a musou game are the enemies. Skeletons, slimes and a few others are your standard musou fodder. Every other enemy is a threat in some way. Hammerhoods beeline toward and sometimes unleash a big damage attack or fall on theirs backs just like in the rpgs. Goodybag types cast annoying status ailments. Zombie are fodderish, but they can poison and have tons of HP (just like the rpgs). Hawk Men are annoying to hit and can later cast woosh spells, etc. etc. Then you've got the big threats, like Killing Machines, Trolls, Living Statues, etc. I was surprised by just how many different enemy types there are. Promo art for the sequel shows a bunch more enemy types, which makes me very happy.

Most missions are frantic tower-defense type deals where you have to protect a person/object from enemies by defeating certain monsters that act as gatekeepers to a monster-summoning portal. There's an optional post-game encounter that reminds of somewhat of something like Monster Rancher's Dahren Mohran fight, or gimmicky MMO boss battles. Between these two things, it really does seem like this game was always intended to have multiplayer. Its already been announced for the sequel. I hope SE really isn't using this game's sales to gauge whether we get the sequel (or other DQ games) because DQH2 is probably going to feel a lot like the game the original should have been to a lot of people.

And I have to mention the great localization effort. Oh, cockney speaking Yangus, how I've missed you. The game's plot is standard fare, but it's well presented and enjoyable. Healix is cute as a button.

The framework they've created is really solid, and they've got a bunch of obvious improvements they can make. Casinos (Maya actually laments the lack of casinos in this one). Dharma temple/jobs/weapon skills. Exploration elements. IX's grotto system for multiplayer. A much improved alchemy pot. I expect DQH3 could be the Monster Hunter Tri for the series. Hopefully SE doesn't abandon the series in the west before then...

  10. Thanks for the impressions!
