The next Yakuza game will be a prequel set in Tokyo in 1988, 7 years before Kiryu left the Yakuza in the backstory of the first game. It's supposed to show a different side of Kiryu as a brash, violent hothead, rather than the stoic reluctant gangster of the later games.
I think this is the best possible thing for the series. They were running out of places to go with the character, and this gives them a chance to reset, which would be especially helpful in the west where the series has lost traction. Setting it in the heyday of the Yakuza at the height of 80s opulance gives it a certain extra appeal, too.
Now the question is if we can convince Sega to bring it here.

Yeah, I just don't want to read about Yakuza games anymore. Not unless it's an announcement of a localization. It hurts too much.
