Oh I agree with that, but it's chicken and egg stuff
They go hand in hand (well, not the news example necessarily)
We also don't have a culture of violence. Look at the American news coverage fetishizing the shooter. I didn't even know who he was until today — the focus was on the victim in Canadian media. It's just... a mentality I guess. America has music and shit over their newscasts keeping people in a panic while the Canadian media was focused on not rushing to conclusions or rumour-mongering. They purposefully use "the shooter" most of the time and not his name which I think helps.
I don't agree with super gun control on many levels. If this idiot had attacked a school instead of a heavily fortified fortress full of armed guards it may have been a different story.

The shooter lived in BC a few years ago and wanted to be locked up. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...jail-1.2810683
And there have been major funding cuts to mental health services in this province in recent times.
He used to go to the mosque right down the street from where I live (and was kicked out). Small world.

Our news is designed to scare and distract us. Nothing more, nothing less
Huh. I was in Cuba watching Ozzie Guillen be nervous and weird during the World Series.
Also: Henry Blanco manages a Venezuelan baseball squadron.

Not to be too much of a foreigner but talking about issues with Americans is different than talking with other nationalities. The discourse regarding American policy is almost always argumentative, whereas the discourse with other nationalities is typically more like a conversation — a sharing of ideas. The news media is an extension of that.
Everything in media (and biz) basically comes down to short term v. long term cost of acquisition and lift-time value. A shooting like this makes the cost of getting eyeballs on the channel super low—so they try to get you to watch it for as long as humanly possible. In Canada the news is partially state-run with civilian auditory oversight so networks aren't beholden to ads or sensationalism.
In most cases a smart combination of capitalism and socialism solves problems pretty easily.
