I haven't tried the new UT since they originally put it out to players.. where they had one map. I did play the Lawbreakers beta a few weekends ago for a match or two. I liked a lot of the ideas and the potential complexities the characters had, but I was a little surprised by how dull the game and characters looked in game. I really wanted to try that assassin with the sword and the zip line but I was out of town for most of the weekend the beta was taking place.
look here, upon a sig graveyard.
Valve took a perfectly good competitive shooter and decided to stop treating it as a video game and started using it as a testbed for all their dumb ideas. Pretty much everything they do these days got its start as a TF2 patch. So the end result is this batshit insane game full of random crap. It all becomes this goofy dumb fun thing. I think it is one of the best looking games ever though.
Overwatch is TF2 without all that random shit but it also has more heroes than Blizzard can balance and a really shitty community full of losers who think they're experts because they read about the meta on Reddit. It's unfortunate. Actually that might be why I would rather play TF2, it's impossible to take that game seriously.
Considering how large the roster is, i think the game is very well balanced with no overpowered characters and only 1 or 2 characters that have a consistently hard time. I don't engage with the community at all, I don't even use a mic, I just pick it up every few months and have a blast playing quick games.
They're pretty irrelevant, honestly. The game makers seem to make decisions that go counter to 'community expectations' more often than not.
It is the town the fanservice bomb dropped on for sure, but it still has a direction to it. I expect that won't always be the case once it gets desperate as popularity wanes, but they're still calling pretty good shots.
