The phone call should have been all we needed. What could possibly be so important that he'd not only brave the outdoors but also put an electronic device up to his head? Plus the "no, it's me."

What a bullshit finale. It got better near the end. Talk about wasted potential though.
It worked as a series and season finale. Leveled everything out and really sets up Saul.
I mean, sort of. Except it's got another season coming.
It really didn't have a lot of the big theatrics the first couple episodes have (mainly in grifts) but it explains his motivation for becoming Saul.
Sure, I guess I was just underwhelmed after the previous episode which was OUTSTANDING.
