Thread: Star Wars: Episode VIII (2017)

Yes, it was more like a mix of beats from ESB and RotJ.

Phasma is like the ultimate disappointment of all time. From seeing the design to seeing her not do jack shit for 2 movies. Pathetic.

Seriously. She makes Boba Fett's character arc in the original trilogy seem like some epic Shakespearean shit.

  3. This movie lost me completely in the second half. I have no idea what’s going on with this franchise.

    - No male leaders on the good guys seemed a bit heavy handed considering all the evil leaders were white guys. Evil could have used inclusion too at the very least.

    - Vilifying daring feats as a male trait seemed counter productive. Why not let the women and minorities cut loose with some throwing heroics? Fun police.

    - I liked Poe’s development. He had actually learned to lead by the end. Finn on the other hand got eschewed in to a (literally) dead end story. I would have liked it if...

    - Rey/Kylo throne scenes were great. The team up fight was really well done. Best of the movie. Unfortunately...

    - I was really disappointed they chose to make Ren immediate fallback in to the light/dark paradigm. It seemed inconsistent with even his own motivation to not give in to history.

    - The training cave hallucinations were well executed and trippy. Reminded me of Luke’s own cave odyssey which fit well. The island stuff dragged on too much.

    - Ghost Jesus Luke was a bit too much for me. Deus ex with a dead man switch tie up. Rey besting him in a fight was silly.

    - Yoda being a cooky old muppet again was terrific. Totally endearing. I liked the Master needing his Master thing.

    - I liked the casino idea. But wtf was the completely uncreative the way they designed that planet?

    - Liked the Thief. Was a nice little side character. I also liked his little nihilistic self-interest angle.

    - Rose side swiping Finn and letting the First Order break the big door was so retarded it ruined the sequence for me. I understand the point thematically about doing things the “right way” but it lacked pragmatism to such a degree I started to dislike Rose. “Fuck all my friends I want a kiss!”

    - Space Witch Leia was goofy. The fake-out death was a bit weird too. I liked Kylo easing up on the trigger though.

    - “It’s salt!” was lulz bad. But I liked the look of the red smoke. Very neat.

    - Rey’s parents completely dropped was okay. I like the idea of Rey not having familial ties to Jedi royalty but I mean... dead junkers seemed a bit too off handed.

    - Lightspeed kamikaze was a great scene and visual but why wouldn’t they have done that sooner when they had 4-5 ships capable of it? If you think about it using lasers AT ALL in these space battles seems idiotic when you can just throw lightspeed ships right through shit. I realize I’m prob thinking too much about the logistics of this.

    - Chewie getting meat-shamed by those penguin things was hilarious.

    - Some of the humour felt borrowed completely from Guardians of the Galaxy. I swear I heard Star-Lord in Poe’s voice there when he was stalling Hux

    - Wow is Phasma a jobber or what? The most impressive thing she did was +2 her AC. Platemail unlocked! I doubt if she’s dead. Maybe she’ll have an eyepatch next movie.

    - I’m really confused where we left off. Nothing changed much aside from Poe.

    - Can Star Wars stop fucking feeling guilty about being Star Wars, please? It’s ruining the fun. They kept cutting fantastical plot down in favour of self sacrifice. Better balance.

I'm kinda shocked that the feminism thing ground your gears so much. Poe is the leadership on the rebellion side (with Ackbar and Dude With Binoculars I guess..and maybe Luke counts too?)
I mean, yes, every prominent figure in the rebel camp is a woman though huh. Carrie Fisher, her daughter, the lady who announces the replacement, the replacement. At the end of the movie though Poe has become the leader? (Finn is a main Rebel character too just not in charge) I mean it makes you seem like one of those alt-right guys to have a sandy vagina about all the leadership being female. More importantly the rebels are a goddamn shitshow, none of the leaders know how to lead effectively and they run their organization like shit, and the "heroes" just make everything worse throughout this movie.

Poe becoming the leader at all IS RIDICULOUS though because the dude straight committed mutiny AND disobeyed direct orders multiple times but the rebels are like literally 10 guys on the Falcon now so any semblance of military structure is fucking gone. This shouldn't be about like, putting down cowboys. This is about not trusting a MUTINEER or someone who can't follow orders in your military organization, but then you get these stupid STUPID patronizing lines like "I like him." "So do I" blah blah blah really dumb. That whole thing is so stupid. Poe should be in jail. So should Finn. Rose sideswiping Finn was really dumb too. I agree with you about all of that.

That's what upset me more than anything else. The First Order all act like Keystone Cops and the rebels act like a bunch of idiots.

In Empire things looked bad but the entire Rebellion wasn't annihilated. ALTHOUGH the cowboy decisions of the main characters (Han, Luke) in Empire DID fuck things up royally for the main characters.

Maybe in the next movie all the strong female characters will be in bikinis chained to giant gross slave masters.

Oh and Phasma is technically a high ranking First Order but lololol

So my issue here is squarely on the clumsy writing. It was poorly executed outside of Holdo’s last stand (Poe’s arc was great). Having women counter all male endeavours handcuffed the story to subtext so severely it affected 2/3 story arcs. For example Rose would have made a better choice to go kamikaze at the end (to avenge sis) and Poe a better choice to stop her to reaffirm he listened to the wisdom of Leia/Holdo. Finn didn’t fit as a notably selfish char. They just forced in another male cowboy to stop. Luke wasn’t given any moments to be an actual Jedi teacher to Rey. The movie was artificially divided between careless men and wisened women at all costs. Worked well for Poe’s arc, but convoluted the others.

  6. I saw it today! I thought it was an OK star war. The hyperspace slice was a highlight.

I really liked Mark Hamill in this, and especially him interacting with the old characters. The rest felt like spy kids 4 or something. Guardians of the galaxy 3 maybe. I think i had the exact opposite reaction than cowutopia when it came to the old characters, i just read his. I cared about none of the young characters, Poe feels like they thought wedge from the original series was a strong enough character to lead the movie.

The Casino shit feels like just another disney movie. In fact, I sat through 20 minutes of disney trailers before this movie and the tone barely shifted when the movie starts. I'm glad they do have an audience in people who like the new chars though. I think without Harrison Ford or Mark Hammil I'm just not going to bother with episode 9, at the very least not in theaters. Eh. Maybe if there was more benicio del toro.

The original triology felt like it took its morals and ethos from Buddhist scripture, and this one took it from Hanna Montana.

    Check out Mr. Businessman
He bought some wild, wild life
On the way to the stock exchange
He got some wild, wild life

  8. Luke is totally coming back in the next one. And comparing Poe to Wedge is an insult to Wedge.

  9. I think he’s gone for good. Especially after all the shit talking he did before TLJ was released.

  10. Not a chance. His body vanished, which means he’s a Force ghost now. They wouldn’t have done that if they weren’t going to use him again. Plus they need something to fill the void after Carrie Fisher’s death - by all accounts Ep. 9 was supposed to be her movie the way this one was Luke’s and TFA’s was Han’s.
