Switch pre-orders are higher than PS4 pre-orders according to Gamestop and Amazon, so there you go. PS4 had 2 million for its WW launch in November. Which was one of the biggest system launches ever. I'm not sure what people expected.Originally Posted by Opaque

I'm not expecting more, it's just weird to me that Nintendo is doing their most aggressive system advertising ever at a time when there are none to be had.
Like the WiiU could have really used this kind of attention before a holiday season when they were rotting in shelves, but the Switch has sold out already. Diff is right that getting the name out is important, but so is conversion rate and zero percent of people who saw the Super Bowl ad could go out the next day and get a pre-order for the system and at least some percentage of people who were turned on to the system and would have bought one next day will instead cool off before it's ever available.
I just feel like if Nintendo waited to do some of this shit until three or four months from now it would make way more sense.
Create hype now, the regular people see it's in demand at launch, sell millions to them this Christmas. It might just work.

It'll have a major new Zelda and Mario game available, Splatoon 2, and an update Mario Kart 8. I don't think Christmas is going to be a problem for Nintendo this year.

You realize marketing decisions are made months ago, specially something like a super bowl commercial, was purchased probably 6 months ago. They didn't make that decision back in January. Companies are probably already buying ad space for the 2018 Super Bowl. So when this more aggressive advertising campaign was decided on, they still hadn't even announced the thing let alone known that pre-orders were sold out.
If the classic NES is any indication or even the Wii many years ago, people aren't going to cool off if word of mouth is good. If anything the fact that they just can't get it at a whim right now is going to make them want it more. Plus again, these marketing campaigns are decided on long before this thing went up for pre-order. Millions of dollars have already been spent on filming, editing and producing these commercials, and buying ad space.
