I don't fully get this argument. Is the point of playing a video game to have fun. If someone likes something because it's fun to them, what's the issue?

This industry needs to mature to the point where fun can be valued but more objective conversations can occur about the relative quality of games as well. It's somewhat a kin to the summer blockbuster in movies. They rarely win Oscars, despite being an enjoyable way to waste a couple hours.

  4. Would it help if "fun" were replaced with "entertainment"? Because that's the ultimate reward of any media, and the reason anyone bothers with this shit in the first place. A technically impressive game is worthless if it isn't entertaining. Same with movies. Flappy bird was entertaining as hell, regardless of the technical backdrop. (From what I've heard), Just Cause 3 is great technically, but a bore to actually play. The movies that do win oscars may not be technical standouts, but hold merit via their entertainment value.
What I'm saying is the "relative quality" of games is moot if they're not fun to begin with. So why would I care about discussing all the p's a game displays if its quality resides first and foremost in its entertainment value?

Who said anything about P's or technology? Fun is not only the absolute minimum requirement, which I think is your point, but it's also completely subjective. Ironically, this whole waste of time started because someone was too dense to understand the point you've made more than once that "in my opinion" is implied on the internet.

  6. If I'm playing a game that has 'dramatic' intentions, I'd better have an emotional reaction, otherwise that game is a failure. A scary game needs to be scary. If a fighting game isn't exciting, it has failed.

  7. Yeah I think SSJN hits it on the head in his last few sentences. The Oscar thing is a great example of this, I've watched plenty of Oscar winning movies that were boring as shit, and not entertaining in the least. It doesn't matter that they won Oscars. It shouldn't matter if a game did or did not do well on metacritic, or won game awards. In the end the only thing that matters is how much enjoyment or fun I got out of them. Battlefront is a great example of this. The game from a technical standpoint is FUCKING AMAZING, it's a beautiful game that runs at a great frame rate. It's also terrible and devoid of anything remotely approaching fun, with a broken ass way of playing matches with friends. To me how "fun" or "entertaining" the game is, is far more important than any technical shit.

Right, but I think that's just "fun" applied to specific themes or genres. That's what I meant about it being the minimum requirement.

Ofcourse, but I think that kind of falls into the entertainment aspect of them. The entertainment/fun of a scary game comes from the scares etc etc. Or is that making the fun/entertainment angle too broad?

I still have no idea where the technical angle came from in this discussion.
