    Playing the Stalk Market

As opposed to the Game Speculating thread, I thought TNL was mature or at least old enough to support a true investment thread in the context of gaming as well. I am by no means a professional adviser, and gaming companies are only one (at best) part of a balanced portfolio, but that doesn't mean this thread can't be educational, fun, and potentially profitable.

Let's kick it off with a (sure to be incomplete) list of gaming stock symbols:

    • Activision Blizzard, Inc. - ATVI (NASDAQ)
    • Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - AMD (NASDAQ)
    • Amazon.com, Inc. - AMZN (NASDAQ)
    • Apple Inc. - AAPL (NASDAQ)
    • Bandai Namco Holdings Inc - 7832 (TYO)
    • Capcom Co., Ltd. - 9697 (TYO)
    • CD Projekt SA - CDR (WSE)
    • Electronic Arts Inc. - EA (NASDAQ)
    • Google Inc Class C - GOOG (NASDAQ)
    • Koei Tecmo Holdings Co Ltd - 3635 (TYO)
    • Konami Corp - 9766 (TYO), KNM (NYSE)
    • Microsoft Corporation - MSFT (NASDAQ)
    • Nintendo Co., Ltd - NTDOY (TYO)
    • NVIDIA Corporation - NVDA (NASDAQ)
    • Sega Sammy Holdings, Inc. - 6460 (TYO)
    • Sony Corp (ADR) - SNE (NYSE)
    • Square Enix Holdings Co Ltd - 9684 (TYO)
    • Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. - TTWO (NASDAQ)
    • Time Warner Inc - TWX (NYSE)
    • UbiSoft Entertainment SA - UBI (EPA)
    • Walt Disney Co - DIS (NYSE)

These companies are not publicly traded:

    • Bethesda (ZeniMax)
    • Deep Silver
    • Telltale
    • Valve

The two that are tempting me right now are Nintendo and CD Projekt. I wish I would have pulled the trigger on the former before the mobile announcement. Procrastination bit me in the ass a bit on that one. I think the timing is right on CD Projekt though. The Witcher 3 launch is going to get a lot of people to install their new Steam-like desktop client, GOG Galaxy, and that could drive additional revenue their way.

  2. Agreed on CD Projekt, they've got a good, strong future if their cyberpunk RPG can match The Witcher. The rest range from stable long-term projects to "oh dear god no why do you hate your money so much!?" Nintendo seems to always find a way out of whatever hole they dig themselves into, and Disney is working the Marvel and Star Wars thing hard. I'd be willing to bet MS, Sony, Amazon, and Activision would be secure but unspectacular places to put money, but the rest? They range from borderline to terrible.

Disclaimer- I don't get the mobile market at all.

  3. Nintendo's mobile stuff could very well be a complete debacle.
The game industry is far to volatile and fickle for me to invest in.

  4. Buy EA, annual sport updates + micro transactions = revenue gold

EA + Star Wars seems like an obvious market win too, but how much of that bump happened when the initial announcement was made? To be honest, I don't consider any of these blue chips that I'd hold for the long haul, so I'm more looking for something I can hold until the capital gains become long-term but not much longer.

I wouldn't invest in just one industry.

    not bingo

  9. I tried to make some money off of EA stock. Their left hand works against the right hand, a sure bet for their mobile games will get subverted by a console flop and vice-versa.
