That reviewer isn't wrong. There is a lack of good modern b movies that try hard but fall short because of talent or funds. So much of the new stuff is just self parody.

Yeah, Danger 5 did the shooting through the phone gag too. It's not like Danger 5 was the first to do a joke about things coming through phones though.
I thought Kung Fury was amazing, lots of good jokes and it looked great.

It was funny to watch with some friends, and the 30 minute limit kept it from getting to be too much. I liked it.
