Yeah I don't read user reviews for anything online any more. A good majority of them either have no idea what they're talking about and the other majority are far more anal than I would ever be. Don't look up panel lotteries, you'll want to murder people very quickly.
I looked it up and apparently I bought my "new" TV four damn years ago. Apparently that means it is garbage in today's industry. Thanks Obama.
Mine might be even older than that. At this point, I'll just wait for an OLED.
I think I'm in the same boat. I bought my first ever HDTV less than two years ago, and I plan on using it until at least 4K OLED is the standard.
I had mine for 8-ish years and was fully blown away with the picture difference between it and the free low end tv that started this thread.
Is there enough 4K content (outside of porno, which is always cutting edge) to justify a 4K tv yet? Isn't it just going to make my 1080p rips look weak?
I am not replacing my monstrosity any time soon. I can't believe I have had it for 4 years already.
I don't think there is a lot of 4K content and I'm not sure when there will be. To this day most TV content is 1080i. I'm sure movies look great but streaming is always a compromise and I'm not going to rebuy discs for the Nth time.
Edit: videogame hardware to run 4K games is also not going to be affordable for a while.

1080p is still probably the way to go if you don't care a ton about movies, they are dirt cheap, and you can wait for 4K TVs to get cheap/get the kinks out (especially using them as PC monitors, it's not perfect).
The only problem with going with a 1080p set right now (if you're buying new) is that they seemingly all have shitty input lag. It's like manufacturers aren't even trying with their 1080p shit.
