Thread: Old Japanese Cartoons: Whatcha Watchin'?

  1. Recommendation! Check out Gosenzosama Banbanzai, a neat oddity from Mamoru Oshii and Pierott. It's about a family of puppet-looking people that are visited by someone who claims to have come back in time to visit her ancestors. Her presence tears the family apart in a series of monologues and goofy nonsense.

Every episode also begins with a short documentary on birds whose behavior fits the theme of the episode!

Here's the first half of episode 1:

The only way to prevent Skynet is to go back in time and prevent Shirow from buying a computer.

Yeah. Like so many anime movies from that era likely to have appeared on the Sci Fi channel Saturday morning, atmosphere alone is enough to keep it afloat and its being Incomprehensible is part of its charm.

I don't know why my phone capitalized "Incomprehensible" but big budget '80s anime full length films certainly warrant it.

  4. Have you seen this? Used to air on Liquid Television now and again. F Zero's daddy. I wish that series had fallen in line to be more of this and less of that "FALCON PUNCH" horseshit, but what can ya do.

  5. YEAH Kawajiri! This short is so great.

That was a part of Neo Tokyo, which also work from Rintaro and Otomo (speaking of Akira). It's an old ADV release, so I'll bet you caan find it in used DVD stores or Goodwills sometimes. Recommended!

And I agree about F-Zero. Smash Bros ruins everything, doesn't it?

  6. Neo Tokyo's awesome! It's in that nice anthology film tradition with Robot Carnival and Memories.

    Robot Carnival is really good.

I really miss the japan of 75-95.

I've meant to read up about the Lost Decade and the 10 years before. I imagine the part of japan we like was developed in the pre-Lost Decade period when anyone could get a bank loan and Japanese entertainment was not shackled just to dumb shit their own people would buy.

  8. I think the Japanese Bubble Economy and the rise of home VHS/Laserdisc are to thank for the golden age of Japanese cartoons. Seems like video player manufacturers like Phillips/Pioneer spearheaded the whole OVA thing too, giving them some nice content to sell for the expensive machines the audience just threw down money on.

  9. Awesome thread. My stepdaughter developed an interest in anime a couple years back and every summer we marathon through a handful of series together. We pick one modern series and follow it up with a classic. Last summer was Bubblegum Crisis and the original Macross, this year we're watching the Lodoss War OVAs.

It's rough in a lot of places, but those Nobuteru Yuki character designs are still absolutely gorgeous. Lovely opening and closing themes, too.
